EtiquetteWhen traveling across these regions, greet people with a firm handshake and maintain direct eye contact. Use formal titles in professional or initial meetings, transitioning to first names only when invited. Punctuality is strictly valued—being even 5 minutes late without warning is considered deeply disrespectful (especially in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria). Personal space and privacy are deeply respected; keep your voice down in public spaces and on transportation. Dress modestly when visiting churches, cathedrals, or historic sites. This is strictly enforced in Italy and Spain, where shoulders and knees must be covered to enter major basilicas. Showing an active appreciation for local traditions, learning a few basic phrases, and following strict recycling and environmental practices are highly valued social norms.
